The Spectrum

Conventional LEDs have a blue light problem. CleanWhite Pure doesn't.

Every conventional white LED produces light by exciting a phosphor with a blue pump wavelength, typically centered at 450nm. That blue pump wavelength never goes away: it is present in the light every hour the fixture is on, and it is the source of many photobiological concerns documented in clinical and occupational-health literature, including elevated blue-light hazard scores, melatonin suppression, circadian disruption, and visual discomfort under prolonged exposure. Some manufacturers have responded by adding additional LEDs or modified phosphor blends, marketing the result as a healthier spectrum. But the underlying architecture never changes. The 450nm pump spike is still there, still on, and still driving the same photobiological concerns the added emission was meant to solve.CleanWhite Pure solves the problem at the source. Its 405nm chip produces white light through phosphor conversion with no concentrated blue peak anywhere in the output. The result is a smoother, broader spectral power distribution, and that cleaner foundation is why CRI 90+ is achievable without compromise.

405NM

CleanWhite Pure, 405nm chip

Single-chip 405nm emission converts through phosphor to produce CRI 90+ white light with no blue peaks. The cleaner spectral base enables both the higher CRI and the IEC 62471 RG 0 safety rating; they come from the same design decision.

450NM

Conventional LED, 450nm blue spike

The 450nm pump spike was not a design choice. It is a product of trying to make LEDs as efficient as possible in a rapidly scaling market. This spike cannot be filtered out by phosphor, lowering CCT, or turning the lights down. It is present in every conventional white LED at full intensity, every hour the fixture operates.

470-490NM

Circadian LEDs

Some products add 470-490nm LEDs, close to the melanopsin peak (~480nm), to boost daytime alertness. The catch is timing. The same light that helps in the morning suppresses melatonin in the evening, and unless the fixture is tuned by time of day, it sends that signal around the clock. CleanWhite Pure keeps its output away from that peak, so the space isn’t sending a daytime signal at night.

Color Rendering Index (CRI) 90+: because better light starts with a better spectrum.

Color Rendering Index measures how accurately a light source reveals the true colors of what it illuminates, relative to natural daylight. Conventional LEDs score CRI 80. Their heavy blue pump spike narrows the effective spectral base, creating gaps in the output that cause colors, including skin tones, food textures, and clinical tissue, to appear cool or slightly flattened.
CleanWhite Pure achieves CRI 90+ because its 405nm chip drives a broader, more even phosphor conversion across the visible spectrum. The output fills spectral gaps that conventional LEDs miss, producing more accurate, more natural color rendering without additional hardware or tuning.
In practice, CRI 90+ means surgical staff can assess tissue color with greater confidence. Dental professionals see shade and gingival tone accurately. Educators and office workers experience less visual fatigue over long occupancy periods. Grocery retailers present produce and protein that looks genuinely fresh. The improvement is not cosmetic.
It is a direct consequence of a cleaner spectral base doing what better light is supposed to do.

Where CRI 90+ matters by vertical

01

Healthcare & Surgery

Accurate tissue color assessment, wound evaluation, and specimen identification. High CRI reduces misread risk in clinical tasks.

02

Dental

Shade matching and enamel assessment require accurate color rendering. CRI 90+ is the minimum standard for serious clinical dentistry.

03

Grocery & Retail

Produce, meat, and packaged goods look more appealing under high-CRI light. Better color rendering drives purchase confidence.

04

Education & Office

Natural-quality light reduces visual fatigue over long occupancy periods. Students and staff sustain focus longer under a cleaner spectrum.

05

Design

Conveying the right colors to clients is imperative to managing expectations. Using a CRI that works closer to natural light means the most accurate results.

OCULAR HEALTH AND HUMAN WELLBEING

The light people spend their days under should not be working against them.

Most people spend eight to twelve hours a day under artificial light.
Conventional LEDs are designed for efficiency, not for the biology of the people underneath them. The 450nm blue spike that enables standard white LED output is the same wavelength range most implicated in retinal phototoxicity, digital eye strain, melatonin suppression, and circadian disruption. CleanWhite Pure removes it entirely.

01

Blue light hazard

The IEC 62471 blue light hazard function, B(λ), peaks between 435 and 450nm, the exact range where conventional LEDs concentrate their output. Removing the 450nm pump eliminates that peak, which means less cumulative ocular exposure over the fixture’s life in clinics, schools, and gyms. That’s why CleanWhite Pure earns an Exempt (RG 0) rating on IEC 62471, while conventional LEDs can score as high as RG 2.

02

Visual comfort

Reduced scotopic-photopic mismatch, less glare, less fatigue. Concentrated blue light at 450nm triggers a disproportionate scotopic (rod-mediated) response relative to photopic (cone-mediated) perception. This mismatch is experienced as glare, harshness, and visual fatigue: the characteristic complaint about modern LED installations. By operating at 405nm with a smooth phosphor output, CleanWhite Pure reduces this mismatch, producing light that feels softer and less tiring under extended exposure without any sacrifice to light output quality.
03

Circadian neutrality

405nm sits below the melanopsin sensitivity window, which means it illuminates without triggering the circadian system. Melanopsin, the photopigment that drives biological timing, has peak sensitivity at approximately 480nm with meaningful response from 450-500nm. The 450nm spike in conventional LEDs falls directly in that range, chronically stimulating the circadian system as an unavoidable side effect of how the light works. CleanWhite Pure sits below that curve entirely. It can run in occupied spaces around the clock without suppressing melatonin or shifting circadian phase, making it the right choice for any environment where biological neutrality is the priority.
04

Long-term exposure

IEC 62471 RG 0, safe for unlimited daily exposure, measured and certified. At ceiling-mounted installation distances, CleanWhite Pure’s output does not approach the photochemical retinal injury threshold (the AP(λ) hazard function) even under continuous lifetime exposure. Risk Group 0, “Exempt,” is not a marketing claim. It is the result of IEC 62471 testing across actinic UV, near-UV, blue light, retinal thermal, and infrared hazard functions. CleanWhite Pure is the only white light LED to have earned this classification. Patents held in the US, EU, and Japan.

SPECTRAL POSITION, WHERE 405NM SITS

The only visible wavelength with antimicrobial action that doesn't touch the circadian system.

The visible spectrum is not uniform in its effects on human biology. Different wavelength bands interact differently with the eye, the circadian system, and microbial chemistry. CleanWhite Pure’s 405nm anchor sits in a precise position: above UV, below the blue-light hazard window, and below the melanopsin curve—while remaining in the only visible wavelength range with proven antimicrobial activity.

And one more thing

The same chip that lights better also produces antimicrobial wavelengths of visible light.

The 405nm wavelength that gives CleanWhite Pure its clean spectrum and superior color rendering is also the only visible wavelength with peer-reviewed, demonstrated antimicrobial efficacy. It is not a separate function. The same chip delivers both benefits every hour the light is on.

How it works

Photoinactivation: no UV, no chemicals, no mode switching.

405nm photons are absorbed by naturally occurring porphyrins within bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses. This creates reactive oxygen species, including superoxide, singlet oxygen, and hydroxyl radicals, which cause irreversible oxidative damage to the pathogen’s cell membrane, proteins, and DNA. The pathogen is destroyed from within. No added agent. No UV. No downtime.

MRSA C. DIFFICILE HIV-1 ASPERGILLUS SPP. SARS-COV-2

Continuous, no cycles, no downtime.

As long as the light is on, the space is being treated. No scheduling, no evacuation, no staff involvement required.

Safe for fully occupied spaces.

IEC 62471 RG 0 means CleanWhite Pure's antimicrobial wavelengths can be produced in ORs, patient rooms, classrooms, and gyms, with people present, without restriction.

Not a replacement for UV-C.

CleanWhite Pure produces antimicrobial wavelengths of visible light continuously, but it is not a substitute for terminal sterilization. For high-risk terminal events, UV-C or chemical protocols remain appropriate.

No resistance development.

Photoinactivation targets multiple cellular systems simultaneously. Unlike antibiotics or chemical disinfectants, pathogens cannot develop resistance to oxidative ROS damage.

Questions about the spectrum.

Why does the 450nm wavelength matter?

Conventional LEDs produce light by exciting a phosphor coating by utilizing a high-energy blue wavelength, centered around 450nm. The spike is not a design choice, it was historically, the most energy efficiency way to make LEDs work. It cannot be filtered or removed without sacrificing output. A spike always remains even if CCT or power is adjusting.

The 450nm range sits at the peak of the IEC 62471 blue light hazard function, meaning it carries the highest weighted risk for ocular damage and stress through exposure. People are aware that the light in their phones might be bad, but they discount the lights above their heads. Over 8 to 12 hours of indoor time a day, most people are absorbing far more high-energy blue light that any single source suggests, even if they limit their screen time.

CleanWhite Pure eliminates the 450nm spike entirely by anchoring at 405nm instead. The result is a cleaner spectral base, a higher CRI, and the best photobiological safety rating.

Is blue light from screens making the problem worse?

Yes, and it is worth understanding why. Screens are a significant and growing source of blue light exposure in the 450nm range. Unlike overhead lighting, screens are held close to the face for hours at a time.

The cumulative daily dose of high-energy blue light now comes from multiple sources simultaneously: the fixture overhead, the monitor on the desk, and the phone in hand. Reducing blue light exposure in the built environment matters more as screen use increases, not less.

CleanWhite® Pure addresses the architectural source, which is the lighting itself, so the space does not compound the exposure already produced by screens.

Is CleanWhite Pure safe for continuous use around people?

Yes. CleanWhite® Pure is certified to IEC 62471 Risk Group 0, the exempt category for photobiological hazard. This means there are no exposure-time restrictions for the eyes or skin. It is designed to operate continuously in spaces where people live, work, and heal. No room clearance, downtime, or waiting period is required.

Why does eliminating the 450nm spike improve color rendering?

The 450nm spike is not only a health concern; it is also an optical concern. Because conventional LEDs concentrate energy within a narrow blue band, the remainder of the spectrum becomes compressed. A CRI of 80 reflects that imbalance. CleanWhite® Pure’s cleaner spectral foundation distributes energy more evenly across the visible range, allowing it to achieve CRI 90+ without additional tuning or hardware.

What does prolonged exposure to conventional LED lighting actually do to your eyes?

Eight to twelve hours under conventional lighting represents a meaningful dose of high-energy blue light before a single screen enters the picture. The 450nm spike present in every standard LED falls within the same wavelength range associated with retinal phototoxicity, eye strain, and circadian disruption in occupational health literature.
CleanWhite® Pure eliminates that spike at the source, earning the best photobiological safety rating possible under IEC 62471. The result is less cumulative exposure every day, in every room where it operates.
